A workshop was held in Victoria during September 1989, bringing together providers of women's education from rural Victoria and New South Wales. The workshop participants listed the benefits (to the women, their families and the community) as a result of the participation of these isolated rural women in further education. The benefits included: increasing confidence; contribution to the whole community; development of role models; enabling the community to become more assertive; assisting in retaining people in the community; enhanced social contact; health and well-being; increased self esteem; enhanced opportunities for further education and employment, and; promotion of change and challenging of entrenched values.
